In the anime (cartoon) Yugioh!, the characters play a card game called "Duel Monsters". However, the trading card game that we play is definitely different since the game in the cartoon was meant to help move the story along. The real life version of the game is much more balanced and far more game like than the one that appears in the cartoons. This provides a far more entertaining and challenging experience than what would be prevalent with the cartoon version!

In the real trading card game, players get a predetermined number of life points and a deck of 40 to 60 cards. Players then take turns using their cards to attack, cast a spell on, or trap their opponent. The overall goal is to reduce the other player's life points to zero. Once that has happened, the game is over and the remaining player is the winner.
ZONES AND CARDS
The playing area has several "zones". The deck zone is used for placing the player's deck face down. The monster zone is where up to five monsters can be played at any given time. The spell and trap zone is where spell and trap cards are placed. A player can have up to five spell or trap cards in play at any give time. The graveyard, which is where destroyed or sacrificed monsters are placed. Spell and trap cards are also placed into the graveyard face up.
During play, some cards can be removed from play altogether through certain card effects. There is also sometimes an extra deck, that is used for Fusion and Synchro monsters.
There are also some special cards called Field Spells. Only one field spell can be active at any time.
PHASES
During play there are several phases. Drawing, where the player draws 1 card from the deck. The standby phase, which is used to activate traps and effects under appropriate conditions. Costs to maintain certain situations are also paid during this time.
The first main phase is when players lay out their cards. Here they can summon, tribute summon or activate one monster. This is where they may also activate or set spell and trap cards. Defence monsters are placed face down unless otherwise stated.
The battle phase is where players can attack once with each monster in attack position. The other player may activate spell cards, trap cards, or monsters with special effects, in response to an attack. Any damage done is taken from the other player's life points.
The very first turn may not be used to attack.
The second main phase is where players can lay down spell or trap cards in response to a battle phase. A monster may also be regular summoned during this phase if not already done.
The final phase is when a player ends their turn and passes it on to the opponent.
ATTACKS
If a monster attacks another monster in attack position, the weaker of the monsters is destroyed. The difference in attack points is taken from the loser's life points.
If a monster attacks another monster with the same attack points, then both monsters are destroyed but no life points are deducted.
If a monster attacks another monster with weaker attack points , but it is in defence mode, then the defensive monster is destroyed and no life points are taken.
If a monster attacks a stronger monster in defensive mode, then neither monster is destroyed and the attacker loses life points that equal the difference in attack and defence points.
If a monster attacks a player directly (no monsters in defence mode), then the player loses life points that equal the attack power of the attacking monster.
WINNING or LOSING
A player loses the game when their life points go to 0, they are unable to draw cards, they surrender, or fulfill an automatic victory.
